Now that the WEEE regulations are in force, what do I have to do to get rid of fluorescent tubes?
Quite simply, fluorescent tubes can no longer be disposed of with your normal waste. As a householder, they need to be taken to your local civic amenity site (the local tip) where you should be able to get away without paying charges. However, as a business, there is no requirment for free take back, so a disposal scheme, such as provided by Veolia Waste or Fluorescent Lighting Services could be the answer. Going rate at present is around £125 for a box of tubes (anywhere between 8 and 24 tubes). Be careful as you could end up paying when you buy and when you throw away as some sellers are including a disposal levy in the purchase price!!!! Also remember that Fluorescent Tubes are Hazardous Waste, so as a business you may need to register as a Hazardous Waste Producer depending on the quantity disposed!

I think since this report was produced, the costs have dropped significantly. In effect, producer schemes should be charging no more than £75 per collection and the remaining cost should be recouped from the intial levvy charged at the point of purchase for the tubes.

Most places now will charge you pence per tube with a possible delivery charge, ensure you receive hazardous waste paperwork. The hazardous waste registration rules have recenlty changed to so you only need to register if you are producing more than 500kg of hazardous waste in a 12 month period. Haz waste such as crt monitors, batteries, oil, chemicals etc… etc…
