The first wind-up MP3 player from Trevor Baylis was adored by Stephen Fry and deemed “especially likeable” by David Pogue. SmartPlanet thought it was pretty good too. Today SmartPlanet can exclusively reveal Baylis is back with his second generation wind-up player, the Eco Media Player Revolution.
This new crank machine improves on the original with promise of a better interface, sleeker design and more battery life from your wind-up exertions. Predictably, it continues the Swiss Army Knife approach of the first edition — it can play music, video, photos, charge phones and record via a line-in socket.
The specs are pretty standard, though they have been modestly pumped up since the original Eco Media Player. The music player supports just about everything aside from DRM tunes and FLAC: MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG and WAV. Video support for the teeny 220 x 176 screen covers WMV and H.264 but not MOV files.
Storage is a so-so 4GB, up from the last version’s 2GB. You can add an SD card to bump it to 8GB. Battery life is rated at an impressive 48 hours for music and seven for video; you should be able to charge it full over USB in three hours. If you power it via clean green wind-up power, one minute of cranking equates to 45 minutes of music. That’s up by 5 minutes on the original model.
Other features — yes, it has packed in everything but the proverbial sink — include a stereo FM radio that can record, a text file viewer and line-in recording. It claims to work with XP, Vista, Mac and Linux.
Like the original, the Player’s ability to charge your phone is one of the cuter touches. One minute of winding should provide around three minutes talktime, and you can get five brand adapters in the box, including Nokia.
All told, the Revolution looks like a decent revamp, but the proof of this pudding will be the interface — the first edition’s menu system was a bit of a ‘mare. Expect a SmartPlanet review next week.
In the meantime, the Eco Media Player Revolution’s on sale for £130 at the first stockists, Ethical Superstore. The original version’s down to £85. And if that isn’t cheap enough for you, there’s always the bargain basement £40 Verio.
If you don’t mind furiously winding the Revolution, you’ll thereotically never need to plug it in
