Could plants save us from the rising carbon dioxide levels from human emissions and greenhouse gases and save us from the Climate Crunch?
Unfortunately no, is the answer according to Ken Caldeira of the Carnegi Institution’s Department of Global Ecology because we are releasing CO2 into the atmosphere at far too greater a quantity. However during the last ice age, when glaciers covered much of the Earth’s surface it was the plants that prevented the earth becoming completely engulfed. Plants provided a buffering agent that provided a role in the chemical breakdown and weathering of rocks and soil and has a major influence on carbon dioxide levels during that period.
Even so, the more plants, trees and forest we humans remove from the Earth will only speed up the effects of climate change, plants may not be answer to the current effects of carbon dioxide emisssions but history shows how our planets has the ability to adapt and evolve, maybe the answer to climate change is already in effect, we just don’t know it yet.
