South East’s largest wind farm opens

July 14th, 2009 · No Comments

The largest wind farm in the South East of the United Kingdom has been officially opened.  The £60 million wind farm was opened by Energy and Climate Change secretary Ed Miliband.  The farm located at Little Cheyne Court on Romney Marsh has 26 wind turbines and stand 115 metres tall. The wind turbines have been active and feeding electricity into the national Grid since November 2008 and should provide enough power to provide the energy needs of up to 33,000 homes.

Although the farm is close to several nature reserves the plan got the go ahead and the owners RWE Npower Renewables state that they should be able to supply enough clean electricity to meet the average annual demand for three quarters of homes in the associated area, this in turn would help contribute to the target of 20% of electricity being generated in the South East by 2020 coming from renewable sources.
